The iPod has been named the second greatest gadget of the past 50 years by the editors of PC Magazine. The Sony Walkman, which is an obvious inspiration for the iPod, took the number one spot. PC Magazine does take a moment to call the first generation iPods ‘nothing special,’ and notes that it was with support for the PC and higher capacity drives that iPod sales took off. When did you buy your first iPod? Mine was in November 2003, I got a 20GB 2nd gen iPod.

iPod second, and at that, second to the Sony Walkman. I don’t really agree with this. I know the walkman came first, but I do not think that the Walkman had the cultural impact that the iPod has had.
Does anyone stop and think of how freakin complicated the process of taking music from one source (CD, online music store) to another source (Mac) to another source (iPod) AND be easy as hell to use? Oh yeah, and on top of that you have 10,000 songs, Videos and/or Photo’s from your last vacation and it is SO EASY to navigate all of this.
And yes it has things in common with the Walkman, but the iPod is much much more than the walkman. The people who made the Walkman have fallen flat on their face over and over while trying to compete with the iPod.
Lastly, I feel like we have yet to see even the surface of what the iPod can and will become. 2nd is very good, but I do think 1st is more fitting.

got mine in 2001, original model (manufactured in week 49/01) - still running mighty fine, battery is at 5 hours
— even cheaper than the original back then …
couple of weeks ago the jump featurewise was big enough to go 30GB black video
