This image was just sent to us. It follows the description provided by several rumor sites and also appears to be from the same factory where the iPod pictures last November were taken. Come on 28th!
Update: The serial number appears to read “MB719Z/A” and the Chinese characters read “This Side”.

The power cord coming out of the right side looks a little matsushita to me. Plus the bevel around the edge looks a little ‘real fake.’

Everyone said a screen that large would be impossible. To be backlit and everything would suck to much battery power and so on. This image is too de rigeur to be a mock up, so looks like we’re in for a tasty treat from Apple!!!

That is definatly a dock cable, covered with what looks like tape, The dock cable for my iPod that goes to my Pioneer car stereo has the same two cables coming out of it.

Its size would mean it is a tablet. I am guessing that the label is a standard address label, which are aprox 4″ wide. Inscale of the picture that would make this a 14″ screen!

Ricardo: No way that is a 14″ screen. The connector is about the same width as the label, and I haven’t seen many 4″ wide connectors around. More likely, it is 1″ wide (standard iPod connector) and the whole thing is about the size of a regular iPod.

BluPyro: The port is not off center. The tape is hanging off the plug a bit on the top side. If you look at the actual plug (you can see a bit of it showing) it looks pretty centered.

All you guys pointing to the Nano’s off-center dock connector as an argument, use your heads for a second and think. The nano’s dock connector can be off center and still fit in a Universal Dock because the nano itself is not as wide as a standard iPod. Any video iPod that is the same form factor as the existing 5G iPod would have to have a centered dock connector to fit into the Universal Dock.

Just my input. If this were in fact real, first check out the “true” blacks despite the great screen brightness, then consider that the sky blue is checked twice in the color bar test. Sky blue OLED is the only blue OLED that has been mastered. If this used OLED, it’s battery life would be much much longer, and the screen’s material could be thin enough to just put an (almost) standard click wheel underneath the screen, making touch screen (and the battery drain that comes with it) unnecessary. This theory would, however, conflict with apples recent patents on touch screen technology. Just something I’m thinking.

If you look real close at the connector you can see that the tape with the writing on it continues past the top of the connector. The connector is in the center.
BTW on the 5G iPods, the headphone jack is way off to the side, not at all in the center.

This is quite interesting in light of the current remarks on a new keyboard input method that was patented as well as the touch screen info. What is the most powerful mobile Intel proc out there at the moment? I would be exceedingly interested in this if it would run Mac OS X such that we could run cocoa apps on it. I don’t care about speed per se; it would make the world a much more interesting place and evoke a new movement away from MS based PDAs. It would be tremendous to be able to run all apps on a small device as well and care your home folder around with you. Very attractive to me as a developer. Also very plausible since, starting with Tiger, display independence is being integrated so that Mac OS X can run on anything as small as a mobile phone to as large as a HDTV, etc.

Color me skeptical. The color of the screen glare on the inner bezel on the upper side does not match the color of the screen. I vote photoshop, but would love to be proven wrong.

What about the content? Why not apple’s ipod OS this time? Also, many have commented on it, but no-one seems to have questioned it: Why do they have the “This Way Up” sticker over the power/data/AV cord? And what has been crudely blacked-out in the lower right of the photo?

If you open it in photoshop, then push the “curves” way down, you can see remnants of the brush used to add the glowing effect to the white edges of the screen. Inspired fake.

It seems more white in the bottom left corner because of contrasting wavelength forms with the bar beside it. The upper right corner has nothing to compare it to, relatively speaking.

Fake fo sho!
As mentioned above, the cord is a lamp cord or other standard power cord.
The greyscale bars and purple bar all have a grainy or static look to them but not the other colors.
When looked at in photoshop up close:
The text on the tape has a perfect halo around it.
The bottom edge (under the green bar) does not line up
And yeah the top line is perfecly straight.

Obviously the JPEG has a Photoshop tag, macshrine.com has edited in Photoshop to put the rounded corners on the image!
Good way to check authenticity in Photoshop is to remove distracting color information, and make the image B&W. Then adjust the Levels in real-time, this usually highlights copy and paste: luminosity is often a problem for fakers. The horizontal black line at top and bottom of the screen and the two black areas are much darker than any other black in the picture, this points towards fake: i.e. the colour screen in the middle being pasted in.
The light blooms around the bright whites are well done if faked, as are the red and cyan colour illuminating the sticker.
The bottom of the sticker looks fake too.
I am also suspicious that in the color test pattern blue is appearing as cyan (50% blue and 50% green); but maybe that’s the image being displayed, but seems very odd … unless it’s a Video iPod prototype with a problem.
Saying all that, maybe Steve Jobs is going to suprise us all!

Another problem with this is the actual practicality of the materials used. It appears to have the same body construction of any other ipods, including the plastic over the screen. Would the reasonably thick plastic over the screen mean it wasnt being used as a touch screen?

That is not a lamp cord. Look at the picture more closely. What looks like the second (upper) conductor in the lamp cord is in fact only the background, in between the cord and the shadow of the cord. It is a single, round, insulated cord which appears to be entering a molded plug a little off-center.

This makes perfect sense for apple. They put out basically a pocket computer, with Safari, iTunes, Quicktime, iCal, etc - then the massive “iPod market” buys it… then all get hooked on apple’s good software… Then, they all buy Power Macs or iMacs. It’s like the missing link in apple’s market domination bid for power. Yay for them, I say.
The specs on this thing look awesome/perfect, but could easily be fake. On that original news page this was from, there’s a comment “what is apple?” - lol, that makes me think it could be real…

I don’t know about the capacity. Neither Toshiba nor Seagate has even a 2.5 in drive with more than 120 GB. However, I did not see any drives with perpendicular data storage. Otherwise, I think that it looks real. If it is real, then I must have one.

You are all speculating about two different things - be aware that this 1st April, Apple is 30 years old - noting this one fact IT IS BELIEVED that Apple will release the first TABLET since the failed Newton.
One thing you might start thinking about is that the intel processors now use far less power and have a better performance ration than PPC. Since almost all code is now “universal”, its plausible that together with the intel build of Darwin (the core of OSX), that SJ has been secretly working on a mobile edition.
If intel and Apple were to work this to there benefit, all the necessary components (networking, graphics, processor) should be on one chip - and we know that Centrino was the prototype for this.
Its too soon for Apple to release ANOTHER ipod given the 5G released in september 2005 - they wont risk alienating the fanbase.

I am 95% sure this is a fake.
The artist mirrored an ipod video to get black around the edges, and cloned the middle. Then overlayed a colorbars photo and painted the diffusion. If you gamma-up, you will see the erasure of the dense blacks in the color bars, revealing the lifted blacks of the ipod video screen. If you gamma-down, the whites crush and reveal weird artifacts. FAKE.
The quality of the handwritting is amature - not the way someone who is fluent in chinese would write it.

I agree, there’s something strange going on in the blacks of the colour pattern if you poke around in photoshop. You can even see it with the naked eye: the top-left black bar is overlayed a little and you can see it’s a pixel lower than the rest of the grey scale bars.

对于iPod的热爱很多人都是不计成本的，这就导致我们对iPod以后的延续产品充满了期待。但曾经出现的各种设计最终目的都是让我们生活的更加舒服。
现在更有一个激动的G5版本iPod出现，它的配置让人有些瞠目结舌。

the music note on the itunes icon is the same way up as the one on the screen. If that was a true reflection wouldnt the icon be mirrored?

This must be an Apple Display with the stand removed or neatly tucked behind the LCD. The cord on the right is just like sticking a USB interface into a d-link bluetooth case. Nonetheless, I’ll still buy the above for 1 USD. Shipping cost inc.

The screen aspect ratio is 16:10, which is the same as apple’s “widescreen” displays. Seems legit to me or it’s a chop job.

Wow… to the lazlo guy seriously, your the only one that needs a life complaigning about other who may or may not believe this is the real deal. The point of comments are in a sense to debate or comment on the item’s or subject’s matter, its not to criticize other people who wish to put their 2cents on the subject and to help out into seeing whether it is real to come out soon or etc.
In my opinion I believe it’s real, considering the source and the previous incident where we saw pics of the 5g ipod a day or two before it was even revealed. Who is to say thisn isn’t the same case?

Definitely a fake part number. All iPod’s and CPU’s have had LL/A part numbers. Z/A has only EVER been used for accessories. I think it says M8 not MB. Even if it clearly said MB, it would also be suspect as Apple only recently crossed into the MA000 range from M9999. Therefore it’s highly unlikely such a product would have a part number beginning with MB.

Sorry but that article is a fake. There is no Dragonball processor capable of anything over 66 MHz. Also, the version numbers indicated do not match Apple’s numbering scheme. Apple would be unlikely to bundle Salling Clicker in their ipod/pda/whatever because they would prefer a homemade solution. Finally, the 163.com article is outdated: october 2004.

Hm, as far as I can tell, all Apple part numbers are in the M****LL/A format, and new revisions are marked by changing the A to B, or B to C, and so on. But, maybe this is an internal part number? Which might or might not make sense if these were caught shipping from China… I’m not sure how that works out.
For one thing, the current iPods follow a MA002LL/A scheme, so MB***LL/A would make sense, but not what’s on the label here. Just my two cents.

Wait, “LL/A” only codes for a U.S. plug… I have no idea what “Z/A” or “BZ/A” could mean. See this iBook brochure with country codes at the bottom of the second page. Don’t know what to think now, although the plastic screen protector could be responsible for refracting the light to produce the halo on opposite corners of the screen (as seen in Photoshop).
I think the only way to tell if this is for real is to wait for Tuesday… just five days, now!

The black segments of the LCD look very much too black. They are the same shade as the marker used to write on the cardboard connector. I’ve taken many photos of LCD panels for my job and black always has a bit of light to it.
Also note how the top left black box goes into the yellow rectangle a bit. Wouldn’t look like that if it were real. But a good fake, all that aside.

The Mac rumors site MacShrine has what might be a picture of a new video iPod. It could be a fake, but it looks pretty cool if it is real: it has a big screen that’s much larger than the existing iPod video screen.

Looks legit to me.
Assuming the 5g iPod screen stretched from end to end it would be:
2″ by 3.75″ exactly. Diagonally, that is ~4.25″
Using a ruler to measure the MacShrine picture, the dimensions are:
1.75″ by 3.00″. Diagonally, that is ~3.5″, which according to thinksecret is the exact size of the screen on the forthcoming video iPod.
Now let’s do some supposition:
Assume that the Video iPod will have the same height dimension as the 5g iPod. Using the measurements from the MacShrine picture, that converts up to:
2.00″ by ~3.42″. Diagonally, that is ~4.00″. Again, this is a supposition and goes against the leaked info.
Either way, the new video iPod is going to be smaller than the previous models we’re used to -OR- the leaked info is wrong, the dimensions will be the same, and the screen will end up being 4.25″ diagonally.

Well matt, look again, the cyan and the red are clearly (but not obviously) shining through, for all my knowledge with retouching (and i am earning my money with it) this is one of the strongest remarks that this sticker sticked on something shining. At least the sticker-screen combination was photographed in situ, I am sure. No ordinary retoucher would have faked that. On the other hand those Brush lines in the blacks and the whites look peculiar. MIGHT be compression artifacts, but i doubt it.
Anyhow, the 28th is my Birthday and my wife should buy one as a gift for me.. subito

I am not going to comment on the validity of this photo in anyway, but it is interesting that a patent was only recently filed by apple for touch screen tecnology…… all I say is there is plenty of room for a decent PDA in the Apple realm.
For me the size of the connector would indicate it is a smaller device, if it was a 12/14″ tablet, that connector would be a good 6-8″ in size.

Hmm, the screen is real, the device is real, but I’m not sure about the rest.
You can clearly see the acryllic material on the sides of the “iPod”. THat’s something that a normal Photoshop-guru can’t make. If a Photoshop-Guru makes something like Acryllic, it will look too smooth.
Although it wouldn’t suprise me if Apple would/could make something like this, this thing is as fake as all the others.
My best guess;
THis is a handyman who made an acryllic casing for a small screen.. perhaps a screen of something like that Creative mediaplayer (or something similar).
But anyhow… this is no Photoshop

Has anyone given any serious thought to the SLIGHT possibility that some reefer-smoking Apple exec threw this contraption out onto the web just to throw all you “experts” off the trail of the REAL item? Case in point, look at all the “expert” pontifications prior to the G5 release. This whole thing is eerily similar to the debate over WMD’s or no WMD’s. Sit back, take a chill pill, and WAIT to see what the real device will be. Or better yet, bundle up all this brainpower and apply it to figuring out what those lines in the dirt in S. America really are.

Guys seriously why the hell would Apple even consider bringing out a larger ipod video infact i bet that thats not even the ipod video but the iTablet!
Just think about it, it fits it’s size if it were an ipod then battery life you suck, on my 30gb black video the batt life is shit imagin it on that + who the hell would want to buy such a big mp3 player/ movie player.
maybe that cable coming out from it is accually the docking cable but that wouldn’t be becuase if Apple were to design an iTablet then the Connector would either be USB 2.0 or Firewire and the end that goes into the obkect would be much smaller.
In conslusion i’m very sure that thats the iTablet

I tend to agreee with other peoples comments here. I think its too early for apple to release a new iPod. The G5 is not that old. Changing the form factor again I think would be damaging for iPod sales given the totally changed the G5 form factor. I think the tablet idea is more likely. But we shall see shortly.

Let’s say its the real deal. Explain why Apply would use a Motorola Dragonball CPU when Intel XScales are the best on the market, they run at 614Mhz and Apple and Intel have a contract. Photoshopped or not, this cannot be real. It would be ideal to have, but no way.
I like to point out, Apple never puts a model number sticker directly on their products as that would destroy the finish of the product. Besides why would a concept/pre-production product even be demonstrated with a product sticker?
Whoever phished this one up overthought it.

Well, I really am excited about this as I do not believe that it is fake (although the above image may not be the “real” thing). I think Apple has finally gotten their act together. The evidence for me is in the viral marketing that Microsoft is doing right now with their Origami. They are getting ready to release the “iPod killer” and the new device to enable true mobility/freedom computing/play and their announce date is the first of March… Sooooo…. Apple ups the ante and announces a February 28 event!

THIS IS FAKE! It’s very lightly photoshoped. It’s a 5G iPod layed on its back, tilted on it’s side, with a RGB screen test photoshoped over everything but the edges. you can see the photoshoping in the top and bottom of the screen where the colors run straight and leave black gaps that have been “smudged” over. he was also clever enough to cover the docking cable with a piece of cardboard just large enough to make it unidentifiable. now just photoshop a mac server sticker over right corner and throw it on some plastic garbage bags(Garbage bags at an Apple test lab? C’mon people.)People just want to belive it soo bad that they dont look at the obvious. -Will

The color bars are WRONG. I don’t presume to know it all but I’ve been in TV production for 18 years and I’ve never seen a test pattern like this one. The color portion almost looks like a combination of NTSC (American) and PAL (European) test patterns. The 2nd cyan tile from the left should be a dark blue and I don’t think the black tile should even be there, particualarly with a monochrome test pattern chart right above it. Google SMPTE color bars and see if you don’t agree. Granted this isn’t a TV but that 2nd cyan tile makes no sense at all. When read by a Vectorscope it would just show up as redundant information, that same as the first cyan tile.

dude…if this thing is real it would b awesome, but how they support the battery lifetime???Even G5 Ipod battery only can take about 3-4 hrs of video playing. And this??? the whole Ipod is a big screen, it would take 2ice amount of battery it will take to play 3-4 hrs of video on that thang..and the slim design I dont think it would support the battery if it real thang. I mean its PLAUSIBLE!!!!!!I bet it will b like 500 bucks dude…

I say the screen is 10cm on the shorter side, and about 15 longest. I think the case will not be much bigger , and perhaps the width of the device would hold controls.
I always thought a simple ’screen only’ interface would work. Touch screen? Why, so you can watch your films through a film of disgusting finger grease?

Although they attempt to make it seem as though they lied, it is still ENTIRELY in the realm of possiblity that, indeed they were,
I guess we will see (Although, keep in mind, it has been confirmed via the European Patent Office and i believe the American Patent Office, that apple has applied for a patent, with a schematic, that roughly remembles what would be the new ipod video.)

The letter MB719Z/A designates it a prototype LCD screen. Also it tells which LCD module maker.
I cannot say which it is but it is genuine. Not OLED screen! The color bar distortion pattern says its LCD.
Most likely its NOT regular ITO touch screen. More likely either capacitive sensor technology modified from cypress semiconductor.
Prevous rumor picts showed a switch on the side. This is real. It disconnects the capacitive touch screen so that the user when slipping into their pocket turns off or messes around with the music.

I know the screen is real because if you look at the barcode sticker, you can see some of the blue light coming through, which is what a real screen would do.

i reallly hope that apple makes a video ipod exactly like this. and if they dont, hey, why dont i make this? i mean this is one of the greatest things ive ever seen. If you were able to make one like this, get some help for the tech you could sell this to microsoft and they would eat it up

If you look at the label on the screen, the light blue from the image shines through it, as does the red.. im still not sure if its a fake either way but thats one more convincer for me! I can’t see many shoppers thinking about that kind of detail! May day job is a Product Visualiser so I kind of scrutinise images like this alot. Anyway just thought I’d throw that one in there.

this is probably real, apple has been developing a touch screen ipod since beginning of 2005. research touch screen ipod for a few days, and be amazed at how many articles there are proving its existence. isn’t it possible that apple did send this picture, and someone found it and dissected it to make their own version of how it COULD be done! if you look at the UPC sticker in the bottom right hand corner, there’s what looks to be a backwards f, meaning something else in Chinese. China is where ipods are made. if i took a lot of time, could’ve made the PSP look fake before it came out if i found a picture of it. plus, more evidence that it could be a FAKE VIDEO. first, the ipod is on a different angle on you tube than it is in this picture, second of all, the lighting on youtube is immensely darker than in this picture. Apple has also been getting patented blueprints for a touchscreen ipod, WITH a built-in digital camera on the back of the ipod. leaving us to wonder…is this ipod coming in december of 2006. most mac websites say…YES!!!!Yeppie!

Guys, this is no doubt an early prototype of the iPhone. I mean, look at the edges of the iPhone. They’re grey, just like this one. Apple just improved the design, and added the microphone and speaker for easier use, instead of the mic and speaker being on the bottom(my speculation). And, obviously, it’s a touch screen, but that thick cover, like all iPods have, probably scratched easy, making the touch sensors go squirly. I see no reason not to beleive that it’s not an earlier version of the iPhone.
On the other hand, there was a Patent application sketch released of something by Apple that had touch sensors on the sides(same place as the grey edges on this one) that looked exactly like this one. BUT! The patent was requested in USA, and by the look of the writing, it sort of appears that this was created in China. I really do think that this is an early version of the mysterious “Multi-Function Hand-Held Device”. Screw what I said about the iPhone, it just clicked in my head, DUH!! This IS a new iPod, well, sort of. I’ll bet you when it comes out, it will look similar to this. DAMN I’m stupid!! Lol!!

Look, all you guy are idiots. This is just a fantastic work of art done in PhotoShop.
I saw this being composed.
What he first did was take a picture of a G5 iPod with the screen facing left,
then took another with it facing right.
He then used the Clone Stamp tool (using the pictures as a reference point) to make one large screen.
Next he got a picutre of and LCD colour test from Google, made a fake sticker and made it slightly translucent.
Oh, and the tape on the dock connector? Four words:
Parcel tape, Translator widget.
