Now we got hold of this image comparing shots of the video showing the making of the iPod video and the original picture. Honestly, we give up on the whole thing, make your own minds up!

Update: Alec has posted a comment mentioning how in the video the “7″ isn’t displayed on the sticker tag. This is getting more interesting by the minute. Post any further differences you see.
Update 2: Seems that the movie really was real after all. Oh well, one day we’ll get an iPod like this!

and they dont show the 7 in the creation video (Fake) that is on the photo?
February 27th, 2006 at 12:08 am
yeah that’s what I was thinking and the screentest looks different in the video

February 27th, 2006 at 12:44 am
Yeah, its not the same in the video
February 27th, 2006 at 12:56 am
the squiggle at the end that he hand draws is not the same as the one in the final picture.

[…] Well today I had to cut my nap short to make a little room for some disappointment, much to my dismay. It would seem the very convincing, and timely "leaked iTablet/iPod" photo was an elaborate ruse. In other words - a fake. […]

also in the translator widget, there is only one dash above the last character. Only a person that knows chinese would know to put two. Is apple trying to trick us, or is there just holes in this guys video.
February 27th, 2006 at 1:49 am
it would be way too hard, if not impossible to exactly recreate all those wrinkles… I know, I really want this to be true too…
February 27th, 2006 at 1:50 am
The purple also looks different!
February 27th, 2006 at 1:51 am
Also few things match up if you overlay a screenshot with the picture.
I figure that it’s not a how the image was made but how a image could be made.
I want to believe that we saw the video ipod and that it will be released tuesday.
February 27th, 2006 at 1:55 am
It would just be too hard to exactly recreate all of the creases in the packaging imo.
I know I really wanted this to be true too…
February 27th, 2006 at 2:05 am
it doesnt really show the entire process just bits nad peices but where the chinese character was different it changes back to the original photo and i just dunno…

If you type in “lcd color test” into goodle images, just like the guy in the video, the picture of that lcd screen does not show up on any of the 7 pages.
February 27th, 2006 at 2:26 am
Yeah, but in the rest of the shots it looks the same. Perhaps he did the writing more than once?
February 27th, 2006 at 2:45 am
The video is a total fake if you ask me - in the section where the person is putting the taped connector in the slot, the top part of the chinese characters doesn’t match the still image… and in the section where they are photographing the ipod, the white material the ipod is on is not wrinkled in the right places and in fact the cable in the lower right isn’t the same shape and there is some cable lying underneath the whole thing in the upper left corner of the video that isn’t in the still image. And heck, when they are photographing the ipod on the white background the taped plug isn’t even in place at any time… video is fake. And the original still is probably fake too but that’s a whole other story

I am pretty sure the video is just showing how easy it would be to make the fake. It is not claiming to be the exact way the fake was made. It is only demonstrating how easily the fake was made. The iPod with the 7 on the sticker is fake, the one made in the video is most definitely fake, and the tablet is so fake that it’s not even worth mentioning.
February 27th, 2006 at 3:04 am
I don’t think this the video is the footage or the the guy making the original image. To me, the video is a demonstration of how someone could have made the image. Conclusion, author of video is not the author of the image.
February 27th, 2006 at 3:11 am
I noticed the black pen scribble is very different when being drawn to when it gets dragged (when it matches the photo), if you compare the two consecutive frames of the video

Anyone else notice that the black squiggle he draws to place in the bottom corner looks nothing like the one in the original photo?
February 27th, 2006 at 3:59 am
And why is the cable off centre? When they photo is taken of the 5G iPod the cable, the cable is centred?
I get the feeling this guy just put little things like this in just to keep us going..im sure he’s laughing right now.
February 27th, 2006 at 4:18 am
I dont think that the video is from the first time he made the picture, other than the sticker “7″, it would explain most of it.
February 27th, 2006 at 4:21 am
Who says the video has to be of the original picture?
Why couldn’t it just be someone showing how easy it would’ve been to do so?

He could have put the 7 later. It would be impossible to replicate in such detail.
February 27th, 2006 at 4:47 am
ADD: he is trying to mess with us!
February 27th, 2006 at 4:58 am
The screen test image is different. But the lack of the 7 and the different chinese writing is strange.

i was assuming that it looked a little different because they photoshoped the image completley. thats why the direct video of the unit in place would look a little different.
February 27th, 2006 at 5:37 am
Also, there’s a cord under the plastic in the video, which isn’t there in the pic

i think it’s a proof of concept video, not the making of the actual image you saw…..
though, now that i think of it has there EVER been sneak shots like this that turned out to be real? none i can think of. the iWalk is the most notable fake video that comes to mine, but there have been a few other faked Apple images in the last few years and offhand ZERO real sneaked spy shots. not saying it’s impossible, but improbable.
February 27th, 2006 at 10:24 am
maybe the guy that made this fake video is a Apple employe, and by doing this, they will try to keep the secret and later make it a surprise for the public.

“though, now that i think of it has there EVER been sneak shots like this that turned out to be real?”
Yes, the shot of the iPod Video.
February 27th, 2006 at 2:11 pm
Could this be made by apple to try and steer away the punters from the actual leak?
February 27th, 2006 at 4:07 pm
I’ve tried this url for a year now, only to get the “Looking for something at Apple?” error message. Allora, not anymore…

A guy from http://www.macosx.nl did it!
He made the first photo for fun and afterwards made a new video,
to show how he did it.
It’s brilliant!

Guys,
Sorry to break it to you, but both the movie and the picture are fake, as HS-L said. For those who can decipher dutch (like me :p), the discussion can be followed over here.

[…] WAIT- THERE’S MORE- A lively discussion suggesting that the video tutorial “How to create a fake video iPod” is a FAKE VIDEO. Does this mean that the image above is real and someone has thrown us off the scent? Read on: http://www.macshrine.com/2006/02/26/total-confusion-is-the-video-fake/ […]

Okay,
Here is the conclusion. (yes, mine)
The video is a fake, the stroke was ahead of the writing :
http://www.geocities.com/farminmeow/fake_video.mov
The picture from the dutch blog is also fake, I don’t care what language it is spoken in, it is yet another attempt to replicate the original photo.
Here are two proofs that they are really two different picture :
http://www.geocities.com/farminmeow/clone_job.jpg
The plastic sheet behind was cloned and extended
http://www.geocities.com/farminmeow/halo.jpg
Sharpening was applied to give the impression that it was the original, but halo shows up around edges, that’s an effect of sharpening.
Also proportion was off, the two does not match.
Overall, not a bad job of cloning, nice drop shadows, extensions etc., but this is yet another fake attempt to say the original photo is a fake.
So that leaves me to question again, is the original photo a genuine?
I have yet to find any good case that it isn’t, the photo was checked, I did not see any photoshopping done to it. The glow around white bars are pretty natural. (Look at highlight from the top left corner of the fake photo, where did that come from?)
I guess we can wait another day or two to find out from Apple.
=)

visible sharpening effects around edges.
Pretty good job overall, but they both are not the same image from the original. So that begs the question, is the original photo a real deal?
I have checked the original, there don’t seem to be any photoshopping done to it, the glow around the white bar seems natural.
I guess we will find out by tomorrow. =P

Strange? Where’d my second post go?
Anywho: I’d made a typo… The movie is _not_ fake, the photo _is_ (as shown in the movie). The movie was created after the photo itself, ’cause the guy was astounded by the amount of interest it attracted. The movie was made to debunk the image he had created himself…
So let’s all just cool our jets and wait and see what happens today, kay?

I can concur, the man who made it is called ‘Arne’. He is a Dutch macgeek who just made the photo for fun and didn’t think it would get out of hand like it did.
Trust me, the picture is fake, the video is real.
