IMPORTANT: THIS ARTICLE WAS POSTED IN MAY 2006, BEFORE LEOPARD’S DELAY WAS ANNOUNCED. PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT IF ALL YOU ARE GOING TO SAY IS WE ARE “LATE”. LEOPARD IS COMING OCTOBER 2007. THANK YOU.
We’ve received unconfirmed reports that Apple is to reveal launch details for it’s next-generation Mac OS 10.5 “Leopard” at WWDC. According to the source, Apple will complete it’s Intel move by WWDC with the release of the new Intel PowerMacs and so the era of Mactel will truly begin. Mac OS 10.5 will be Apple’s most advanced OS to-date, concentrating more on the techincal side than eye-candy. New features will include radically improved Spotlight technology more tightly integrated with the Finder, more official Cocoa widgets, improved filesystem, Blu-ray support, Automater 2.0, optimized support for Intel processors, iChat 4 with whiteboard and tabs, new Front Row to be included as standard and the final release of Boot Camp. The November release date was chosen to bring strong holiday sales and so at least 2 “point fixes” would be released before updated iMacs and Mac minis come in January. It is expected to retail at $129.99.
Update: Sudeep has posted an interesting list of features he wishes to see in Leopard. It’d be great to see it all in Mac OS 10.5.

Not too sure.

Unconfirmed reports? Of COURSE Apple will show off Leopard at WWDC! Steve Jobs said so officially at the end of his WWDC ‘05 keynote. And, though we know he can say one thing and do another (”They’re digging in the wrong place” style), it usually isn’t the kind of guy that disappoints the developers that support his beloved platform.

l0ne - If you read the article accurately you would have read “reveal launch details”. It is common knowledge that he will preview it.
May 6th, 2006 at 8:05 pm
It’s also easily inferred that a launch date or other launch details will be revealed, as happened for Tiger in WWDC ‘04.
May 6th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Well if you count “first half of 2005″ as proper launch details.

Eh, these reports sound bogus. Half of those features don’t make since. If anything, I would say a major change would be in the finder. If you remember back about 8 months, Apple posted a job search for someone to redesign the finder. We haven’t yet seen the product of that. I have a feeling a lot of the changes in Leopard will be very unexpected.

[…] Just because we weren’t updating, doesn’t mean we didn’t keep up to date with our Mac news and rumors. AppleInsider reported that Apple was set to preview Mac OS X 10.4.5 at WWDC last week. So what’s the problem? Well we reported it back on the 6th May, over a month ago… We just wanted to get this off our chest. Just because one site is bigger than anothers, doesn’t mean they should ignore the smaller sites and take all the credit, even if that smaller site wasn’t “online”. I’m sure it won’t happen again. Any updates on the release of Mac OS X Leopard?
September 2nd, 2006 at 3:35 am
I am curious as well, any ideas for when its being realeased
September 11th, 2006 at 3:01 pm
iMac updates in January you say? They are already here, unless of course the new ones will be updated in January so soon after the September initial release! And Leopard, a lot of talk but no action it would seem.
Nothing suprises me with Apple anymore!

When is the releasse date? This is all I want to know about the Mac OS X Leopard.
November 2nd, 2006 at 10:07 pm
Is a November release date still the “unconfirmed report”/rumor or has it been pushed, Vista style?!
I am looking forward to this new release and just wanted to know if anyone has any info on a release date.

Got the green light from the head of state for the purchase of a new Mac, but kinda of sketchy on whether or not to wait for the new release of OS X 10.5. Does anyone have a decent notion of when this will actually be released? I’ve read a few reviews of the WWDC, and not currently being an owner of a Mac I’m not sure if the release will be worth the agony of waiting or purchasing right now.

I would not wait for Leopard, purchase now. The most you’ll be out is the cost of a new OSX and I doubt if Apple will ding you for it anyway if it’s released soon. You could be waiting months.
In the meantime, you’re getting stuff done.

If history is any indication, Leopard will be $129.99, whether you have a previous version or not. That’s how apple’s pricing has worked in the past.
January 8th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Yes, all (if not most) Mac OS X releases have been $129.99.

Any updates on this? I’m guessing we missed the November launch.

Pardon me for entering into your shine, but I’d like to echo the statement by nathan. When is OS X 10.5 Leopard going to see the light of day again? Confession, I’m typing this on a PC (and sick and tired of doing so). In other words, I’m waiting for OS X Leopard to make my move to Mac’s. Unfortunatly, I can’t wait forever, and I like what I see at apple.com…..but how about a new theory on a release date, huh?
February 11th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Leopard was not going to be released before Vista reached a final cut. Possibly paranoia, in case the Redmondites could add a “mirrored” feature to match any of the new features showcased in Leopard.
If you want to make a move to a Mac, buy a Mac-Mini, its cheap, you can use your existing keyboard/video/mouse, and just buy the upgrade when you’re ready, it’s simple enough.
The tea leaves tell me March/April ‘07, but no later than June for launch.
February 25th, 2007 at 4:16 pm
Release is supposed to be end of March. No later than April.

@Geoff
why wait? I have orpdered the 20″ imac which i will be getting tomorrow, and i will be buying leopard when it comes out, the fact is, Tiger is still a vast improvment over XP, and from what I have seen of vista its better than that too, anyway, I will be using tiger to get to grps with the mac OS X so that when Leopard comes out I will be well veresed in the ins and outs of the OS. why wait?
March 5th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Helloooooooooo!!!
The Apple website clearly states the launch of LEOPARD in SPRING 2007
So unless spring season has changed its time now!!! Leopard should be launched no later than April!!!!
March 14th, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Okay, the last comment about Spring meaning “no later than April” is rediculous. According to the calendar, Apple has given themselves an absolute deadline of June 20, 2007—the last official day of Spring this year. April is just the start my friend. The Apple groundhog says no Leopard until June.

i am currently thinking about purchasing a new laptop..i am leaning toward buying a macbook pro, but dont know if this is the right option…is it worth waithin for leopard or should i not buy a mac at all?
March 14th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
I think that you should just wait until end of March when an announcement should be made on the Leopard release date. But if you really need it, then of course purchase it now.
March 15th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Just wanna know if user of MacOsX Tiger will have the possibility to update to the leopard version for free or will it be a completly new system to buy/install ?
March 19th, 2007 at 4:32 pm
Same question here. I’m migrating to Macs but I’d like to get the latest OS since they are saying Leopard is supposed to be optimized for the intel processor. If I’m going to drop 3g on a Macbook Pro, I don’t want to pay an extra cent for a software upgrade that is coming 2 months down the road. I’d wait for iLife 07 if I knew the release date for that too.
March 20th, 2007 at 4:44 am
You are always gonna have to purchase a new OS when they release one, Steve Jobs may work for only $1 a year, but doubt if he has heard of the word “free”. Am sure of this though, it will be worth the money!
March 20th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
I just ordered a 20″ iMac from Apple store. I then read on some rumor site that “Leopard is being released this week!”.
So I tried to cancel the order, but the tech talked me out of it saying Apple will a lot of times offer a free or reduced price upgrade and she gave me expedited shipping.
It doesn’t really matter. I bought a Tiger book and I will get up to speed, and then upgrade to Leopard. You might be waiting months if you want to wait.
March 21st, 2007 at 2:53 am
whenever Jobs has announced something in the past he has always given a release date at least 4 months away, ie if he announces a release date today, you can put money on that you wont see it until at least July..
March 30th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
well I think it will launch very soon, I have been waiting for months now, and if anyone has been following the price charts for macbook pro you will note that the price for the 17inch dropped down $200. and the price change trickled down the product line. So something is about to go down soon (I hope) lol…but that is a good indication that something might be ready..just my .02

So I`m not the only one waiting for Leopard. They should give free upgrade option for people buying macs with Tiger these days.

OCTOBER 2007 …. straight from the horse’s mouth: http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/

Apple have updated their site to say it’ll be October 2007.
it’s not fair
May 24th, 2007 at 2:09 pm
Mac’s new OS Leopard is now “married” to Intel CPUs.
Do not look for any projected release dates on the the OS from past experience.
Do look into when Intel is going to release a new chip set with a smaller dye (65 nm) and new instruction sets on the new chipsets. This is what will make the new OS “leopard” be able to achieve all the wonderful, fast, optimized features you are seeking. HINT… do a search for PENRYN the chipset release from Intel that will surpass Conroe.
