Alternate skinned iTunes 7? Apple Keynote Bloopers
Sep 16

iTunes 7 iconIt appears that Apple is busy fixing up iTunes for a quick “point one” update next week. Since iTunes 7 was released a few days ago, many users have been saying that it’s “the worse iTunes update ever” and “did Apple even alpha test it?”. Posts on Apple Support forums have angry users complaining that iTunes 7 is a memory hog, crashes the system and has song “amnesia”. Don’t expect a change to the new interface though, it seems that this is the upcoming “Leopard” look *shudders*. Anyone else having problems?

I have found that older iPods (3G and Mini firewire cable) will not work with iTunes 7.0.1 on my Quad using a 30-pin to firewire cable. It tells me that the device can not be read from or written to. After doing a restore the iPod did not take the restore and I had to let the battery drain till it shut down and I could figure out what was going on. On first thought I was assuming that the HD failed but I studied on the matter and connected them to my G4 Cube running an older version of iTunes and they work fine. I then tried the 3G and Mini on the Quad again but instead of using the standard 30-pin to firewire cable, I switched to the 30-pin to USB2 cable and BAM, it worked fine. Apparently Apple forgot to make sure the new version was compatible with older firewire iPods or they are not planning on doing firewire support anymore. Maybe they are trying to make you buy a newer iPod. Well I have most models starting from 1G to the last 5G and all in between so I do keep up but I like every model so I have somewhat of a collection of iPods right now…

  2. Craig Pugsley Says:

No problems here with my iTunes and 1G Nano. In fact, I would say that iTunes is by far the best version of iTunes there has been. Apple have done a good job in consolidating all the various new features that have been added to it over the years into a wonderfully clean and easy to use interface.

Personally, if this look is what we’re going to be seeing in Leopard, then bring it on. I for one think it is very clean, professional (credibility being something Apple is still lacking in the computer space and if a more professional L&F can help improve that, then so be it) and uncluttered.

  3. Ken R Says:

They better…. They broke the “Convert higher bitrate songs to 128K AAC” for the Shuffle.

  4. Joe Says:

I just bought a new iMac. When I did, I downloaded the new version of iTunes as I was told. I then transferred 50 gigs of music from my eMac to this machine.
Since then, my new iMac (which was supposed to be faster and more efficient) imports CDs at about an average 3X speed and burns an 80 minute CD in about 10 mins. I couldnt be more unhappy about this since I invested my money and faith in this product. When I took the computer to Mac’s Genius Bar, they were stumped. They had no solution other than to delete my library. I havent had the time to back all these files up since I have been dealing with issues that iTunes 7 has created on my machine. Needless to say, I am really disappointed.

If I wanted computer trouble, I would have stayed with Windows.
They could be counted on for that.

WHAT IS BEING DONE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AND WHY SHOULD I HAVE FAITH THAT A NEW VERSION WONT MAKE IT WORSE?

  5. MacShrine » Blog Archive » iTunes 7.0.1 update released Says:

[…] As we reported last week, Apple has finally released a fix for iTunes. Version 7.0.1 should fix most, if not all, bugs and nuisances from iTunes 7. It is available online or via Software Update. iTunes 7.0.1 addresses stability and performance issues with Cover Flow, CD importing, iPod syncing, and more. […]

it appears that i’m one of the few who have never had any issues with itunes 7.. i’m running on a 1.67 PB G4, and so far, everything’s run phenomenally. it is a bit more of a resource hog than the previous releases, but with the new features, that’s to be expected. that’s why we have core 2 duos coming onto the scene :-P

  7. matt Says:

burrito….you’re completely wrong. We should NOT have to go out and buy the new Core Duo macs simply because itunes is a resource hog. My 1.67ghz PB should be able to run it just fine, but since Apple obviously rushed 7.0 out, things are a little different.

  8. jesse Says:

I guess you guys may not know/care but iTunes 7 doesn’t even install in WindowsXP 64. Anyone know if 7.01 is fixing that. It seems to be basically because they’ve got issues with accessing the cd rom.

  9. wes Says:

Does iTunes 7.0.1 fix the “export to iPod” setting in final cut pro and quicktime pro? After I installed iTunes 7 it changed my settings in other pro apps. Now my files size is twice as big … what gives? Is this because of the new iPods? Anyone have some thoughts?

  10. Chad Says:

When I first updated to iTunes 7, I kept getting this error message:
“iPod cannot be updated. The required file is in use.”

This seemed to happen every couple of files, and would generally pop up after a new song started playing for a few seconds.

From the research I’ve done, it seems that iTunes 7 had some issues with Firewire iPods (I have a second generation FW iPod for Mac). This became very annoying very quickly. So much so, that I ended up regressing back to iTunes 6.

It is just too bad that Apple released this lemon of a program before it was really ready for prime time. But I guess they had to keep on track against Amazon, and whatever else.

I downloaded iTunes 7.0.1 last night, and I haven’t seen any problems yet, so I’m hoping that they were able to iron out the bugs and get iTunes back up to speed.

  11. T Rex Says:

worst itunes ever… no, seriously. i use itunes on my PC and here are the problems i get:

-the song will not play in succession. that means if i have a group of songs playing it only plays one and stops. this is very annoying to say the least.

-random play isn’t random. the only way to SOMETIMES get itunes 7 to play one song after the last is to put it on random. but random only goes through about the same 5 songs even thoug i have thousands in my playlist.

i hope they fix this quick…

  12. Joey Says:

Well, import speed is now faster. But, burn speed is still very slow.
Since my iMac is brand new, I dont know what the average burn speed should be. But, an 80 min CD takes about 10 mins to burn. I dont think it should take that long.

    Any thoughts?

  13. Chris Says:

I’ve just updated to itunes 7.0.1, and it’s still terrible, songs skipping, and not only the protected AAC files now, all of my MP3’s too… awful. i’ll be sticking with my PC if this is the best apple can offer. it just doesn’t work…

  14. Ogreman4 Says:

Gosh. A window pops up asking do I the latest version. Sure. I download to my XP, install, and now every song I own skips! Hope they get a fix soon.

  15. Brandon Says:

my itunes 7.0 wont even install b/c of quicktime player wont read idk what to do with it all

  16. Kevling Says:

I upgraded to 7.0 on my windows pc with no problems at all. This week I took the plunge, and made the switch to a new Mac Mini, looking forward to seeing iTunes on its home turf.
    Oh dear.
Every time I try to sync my 5G 30Gb iPod, iTunes tells me it cannot read my iPod and suggests I restore it back to factory settings.
4 times so far and I’m getting bored now.
I know this is just unfortunate timing for my new mac, but it`s not a good advert for Apple if I`m actually missing my PC right now…

  17. Eric Peters Says:

7.01 is still horribly slow on my PC, it takes about one minute to select the next song! This seems to be related to the amount of songs in your library, I have over 31000, maybe people can post the amount of songs they have to compare this

  18. Q Says:

I just updated my itunes from 7.1 to 7.1.1 and it wont play half of my songs anymore!! I just updated last night and restarted that night when i went to bed. When i woke up this morning half of my songs wont play!! i still have all of the files and have located them and tried to play them or add them again……..still nothing!! It doesn’t give the missing file error either and it just skips over it like its not there and goes to one that it can play! If anyone has any tips or ideas i am open please.

Hello Forum. I have an original i-pod that I have had for years. It is durable and reliable. I am still using the old i-tunes version but I want to upgrade to the new version so I can watch missed episodes of lost. However, i-tunes is telling me to uninstall my old i-pod software and then reinstall it after the i-tunes upgrade. After reading this forum, I am a bit scared.

Also, has anyone heard of problems with choppy video playback using i-tunes and quicktime on i-tunes purchased videos? I have read many complaints.

What is going on? I was going to get rid of my PC and go MAC because I am sick of troubleshooting, but if MACs are having these issues, I’d rathre stick with a solid $800.00 PC and not spend the huge $$$$ on a MAC. Especially if they are just going to make their programs so hungry it will force one to buy new hardware in 3-4 years.

  20. Jay Says:

I have an older 2Gig nano (1.2 i think) and just updated i-tunes to 7.1 but now when I want to add songs i-tunes says that ther is not enough memory even though there are 500 Meg’s of available memory. It will say this if I just want to add 3-4 songs. I need help.
