The 10.4.8 Update is recommended for all users and includes general system fixes, as well as specific fixes for the following applications and technologies. Some of the changes include:
Connecting to wireless networks using the EAP-FAST protocol, Apple USB modem reliability, using OpenType fonts in Microsoft Word, compatibility with 3rd party USB hubs, scanner performance, RAW camera support, printing documents with Asian language names, performance of the Translation widget, broadband network performance and security updates.
The update weighs in at 140MB and remember that if you have an Intel machine, there’ll be a double startup.

I did the update to 10.4.8 from 10.4.7 and now the user account that I was logged into when I did the update, I can not log into. I get the log on screen, and I type in the password, and then the creen goes blue for a second or 5, and then it just goes back to the log in screen. I can log into other accounts on the computer, and I have even attempted to change the password for that account. But nothing fixes it. This is a serious bug with 10.4.8, I would appreciate any help anyone might have to resolve this, asap. admin@focusarts.net

I installed 10.4.8 on my Intel PowerBook and am now unable to access my Airport network. The Airport applet doesn’t see the network. When I try to add it manually using “other networks” and select WPA2 for authentication, the “OK” button is grayed and can’t be checked. At the same time, 10.4.8 works fine and accesses the wireless network on an Intel iMac.

I installed 10.4.8 on my G4 laptop. It did the reboot but then never got beyond the spinning wheel under the grey apple. Half hour or more later, I logged in via ssh and saw there were no steadily running processes (nothing using significant CPU load). So it looked like startup was hung. The /var/log/systemp.log file says:
…
/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started
/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
over and over.
Tried to start loginwindow manually from the ssh bash shell prompt as root. It runs then exits with an 11 exit status but no other info. So now my G4 Powerbook seems useless.
I’ve tried restarting after removing /var/db/loginwindow.boottime - it had been zero length file. But same result after reboot and the file re-appears again. Tried moving a bunch of cache files/directories away and rebooting. Same result. Tried moving /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist away but no diff. Moved stuff from /System/Library/LoginPliugins/{FSDisconnect,BezelServices}.loginPlugin away then rebooting and again no diff.
Advice?

Joe,
did you have any luck with getting it up and running? I’m looking at exactly the same problem right now.

Joe, my verbose login reports the exact message : “System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow: Login Window Application Started”. I have an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar this afternoon. I will report back this evening. Btw, I too have a G4 Powerbook.

Okay, I fixed it myself. I forced a boot from the Mac OSX Tiger install disc (hold down “C” after the startup tone) and chose the “Archive and Install” option. But first I freaked out a bit when the HD icon had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it! Also, I forgot that my touchpad was reset to not tap-to-click. Anyway, I’m back up.
