NewsWireless.net is reporting that Apple has partnered with Vodafone, T-Mobile of Germany and Carphone Warehouse and is expected to announce the UK iPhone on Monday. It is expected to launch this October. They say:
Vodafone is currently in an ideal position to take on the iPhone, because its 3G network is hugely under-utilised. Pricing on mobile data is normally prohibitive, but Vodafone has recently revised its 3G data charges down, following “rip-off” complaints from users.
Update: We’re also hearing that the European iPhones will NOT feature WiFi because of battery issues. That would seriously put us off purchasing it.

I wouldn’t worry about the lack of WiFi, under one condition:
all plans include unlimited internet use.
Why? 3G in Europe is so fast, that there are now companies offering 3G routers as a DSL replacement for use at home.
In other words, you’ll have internet speeds as fast going directly through 3G internet as if you were going through a faster WiFi and then end up having some DSL line “bottleneck”
After all, how much are you going to do with the phone on the LAN and how much on the public internet? For the latter, the speed of your connection to the ISP matters, not the speed of the WiFi connection. And in that regards, 3G is fully competitive for most users.
