To be in compliance with a court ruling, Deutsche Telekom announced today that they will immediately start selling an unlocked iPhone without contract for 999 Euros. The iPhone will still be sold, as before, with 2 year contract for 399 Euros. Bloomberg reports that customers who purchased the iPhone in Germany after November 19th may have their iPhone unlocked for free. Existing German iPhone customers can reportedly also receive the unlock for a fee. Would you pay 3 times as much for an unlocked iPhone?

Well, 50 Euro per month for the Telekom Subscription plan with a two year contract with only 100 Free minutes per month is very expensive in Germany, even in comparison to other T-Mobile plans.
over two years a locked iphone will cost you at least 50Euro x 24 + 399 = 1599 Euro. Lets say you get a moderate 15Euro per month plan (there are cheaper ones, but we want data as well) then it will be 15Euro x 24 + 999 = 1359
That means if you get a plan with less than 25 euro a month it will be cheaper all in all over two years. Plus I imagine the resale value of an unlocked phone will be higher, and you can always switch providers and cancel your contract if money runs out.
I’d say it is a much better deal than the fixed subscription plan.
